Scene: The lobby of Denver-Carrington Center….

Leslie: Ladies and Gentlemen. I want to welcome you to Denver-Carrington Center and this press conference.

(meanwhile up in Patrick and Leslie’s office)

Patrick (hears his cellphone ringing): Hello?
Ed McCormick: Pat. It’s Ed. I’ve got some more news on McQuade.
Patrick: All right. Tell me what you have.
Ed: He’s ready for us to come up to Greeley and talk to him.
Patrick: Is he there?
Ed: Yeah. He is.
Patrick: Thanks a lot, Ed. I have to get downstairs for the Press Conference. After that, I’ll get with Leslie and Jeff. Keep me posted.
Ed: You got it.
(a few minutes later – at the Press Conference)
Leslie (whispers to Patrick): Where the heck have you been?
Patrick (whispers back): I was upstairs on the phone to McCormick. McQuade’s ready to talk. We’re driving up to Greeley right after this. Jeff and Fallon are coming with us.
Leslie: Sounds good.
Emily: After conversations with Denver-Carrington CEO Vice Admiral Patrick Carrington Jennings, USNR and Mr. Colin Forrest, Chairman and CEO of Forrest Aerospace, Ltd., we have decided that, in light of recent events concerning Tesla, we feel that it would be in the best interests of both of our companies to pull out of our deal with Mr. Elon Musk of SpaceX. No official commitments have ben made to this deal as no official documents have been signed. I now turn it over to Miss Ashley Forrest, Public Relations Director of Forrest Aerospace. Miss Forrest.

Ashley: Thank you, Mrs. Fallmont. I have had the same conversation with Mr. Forrest and he is in complete agreement with Denver-Carrington’s stance on this issue. With that, I’d like to turn it over to Mrs. Fallmont’s capable assistant Miss Rosalind Parkhurst.

Rosalind Parkhurst: Thank you, Miss Forrest, Mrs. Fallmont. Our companies deeply regret this unfortunate turn of events and our deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Musk. Our companies have discussed the possibility of revisiting the issue in the future, but no date has been set at this time. Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Gordon Wales, Jr.: Mrs. Fallmont. Gordon Wales, Jr. World Finance magazine.
Emily: Mr. Wales.
Gordon: My sources tell me that Denver-Carrington is pulling out of the Musk deal because they are embarrassed by Mr. Musk’s personal conduct and that he should be banned from doing business in the United States.
Emily: Mr. Wales. I don’t know where you get off making a statement like that. Denver-Carrington’s source as far as the press is concerned is me and I NEVER said anything like that.
Leslie: Mr. Wales we would like you to leave this conference immediately.
Patrick: Mr. Wales I don’t know what your deal is, but as far as I can see, World Finance magazine is becoming the business world’s answer to the National Enquirer – just a cheap, tawdry supermarket rag. It will NEVER be in the same class as Business Week, Fortune or Forbes.
Gordon: Is that so, ADMIRAL Jennings? Well…..meet our new publisher.
Leslie (sees Alexis walking in with Percy Havensworth, her financier/lover): Oh no!
Patrick (sees them too): Alexis what have you done???

Alexis: Oh. Sorry I’m late. I’d like to introduce you to my financier Mr. Percy Havensworth. He made arrangements to help me purchase World Finance magazine. You see. As of this morning, I am the new Publisher.
Leslie: So you now own that AND the Denver Mirror.
Alexis: That’s right. 🙂
Patrick (shaking his head): Un-frigging-believable.
Emily: Ladies and Gentlemen. That concludes this morning’s Press Conference. Thank you for coming.
Patrick: Mr. Havensworth. I know you only by reputation and I have respected your work in the business and financial communities for a long time, but I don’t understand how you can become mixed up with this barracuda.
Percy: Alexis and I go back a long way.
Emily: That’s unfortunate.
Percy: She presented me with a sound business idea and I decided to help her put it together.
Patrick (whispers to Leslie): Bet that’s not ALL she presented to him.
Leslie (whispers back): No kidding.
Alexis: Well…..Percy and I are off to Cozumel for the weekend and, just so you know. Adam’s funeral is next weekend.
Patrick: Whatever.
Leslie: It never stops. Does it?
Patrick: Nope. What do you say we hit the road for Greeley? Jeff and Fallon are coming with us.
Leslie: Sounds good. Let’s go.
(about half an hour later -on the road between Denver and Greeley)

Jeff: I heard what happened at the Press Conference this morning.
Fallon: I guess Mother struck again.

Leslie: As per usual.
Patrick: I think your mother could be a crossword clue. Six letter word for trouble beginning with “A”.
Jeff: Really.
(about forty five minutes later)

Patrick: There it is. The McQuade place. Ed’s directions were right on the money.
Jack McQuade (comes out with his wife Sheila): Jeff Colby! How are you? Been a long time.

Jeff: Hello, Jack. I guess before we go any further. Introductions are an order. I’d like you to meet our CEO Vice Admiral Patrick Jennings, USNR, our President and his wife Leslie and last, but certainly not least, the head of our Real Estate and Properties Division and my wife Fallon.
Jack: It’s real nice to meet all of you. This is my wife Sheila.
Sheila: It’s a pleasure.
Leslie: You have a lovely home.
Fallon: With such a splendid view.
Sheila: Thank you. If it hadn’t been for the severance package, we would have lost it right away. Damn Alexis Colby!
Patrick: Yeah. About that. Why don’t we all go inside and talk?
Sheila: That’s a good idea. We have cornbread and chili on the stove.
Jeff: So let me get this straight. You give a kid a positive evaluation and Alexis just out of the blue fires him?
Jack: Didn’t even give him notice. She just gave him five minutes to pack his stuff and get out.
Patrick: You even wrote that this kid was executive timber.
Jack: I know. When I went to call her out on it, she fired me too. It’s like she was keeping him down just so she didn’t have to pay him so much.
Sheila: And she fires Jack after he had been with the stupid company for thirty five years.
Jeff: God, Jack. I remember when you started out with Colbyco as a roustabout when you were like eighteen years old.
Jack: Yeah. Then I went to college here and there and I finally got my degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Northern Colorado.
Patrick: Here in Greeley.
Fallon: That’s outstanding
Jack: I wanted to give Alexis little choice but to keep me on. Whatever happened to Miguel Santos anyway?
Patrick: We got him a job at Silva-Costa Enterprises.
Jack: You mean he went back to Brazil?
Leslie: No. They opened up an office in Denver. He runs that.
Jack: Well…..over the years, she kept hiring more and more illegals. She figured she could pay them next to nothing, but they’d be so grateful to even have a job that they wouldn’t care. Low overhead she said.
Fallon: That’s mother for you.
Jack: I tired to tell her that hiring illegals was only going to come back and bite her in the ass.
Jeff: Yeah. So did I.
Jack: And that son of hers.
Patrick (in unison with Leslie, Jeff and Fallon): Adam.
Jack: Yeah. That’s him. He was all over his mother hiring illegals. Told her it would keep costs down in the long run.
Jeff: I remember he got me to sign something when he poisoned me with that boat paint. It must have been an order for Colbyco to hire illegals.
Sheila: Now Colbyco’s got hundreds of illegals working their rigs and Jack, a qualified engineer, is out of a job.
Jack: God! I remember dealing with Adam a few times. I came really close to punching his lights out.
Patrick: Maybe you should have.
Fallon: Might have knocked some sense into him.
Leslie: Doubt it.
Jack: There were hundreds of young kids looking for a job on a rig, but they couldn’t get one because their jobs were taken by illegals. I mean Alexis had to realize at some point that what she was only going to lead to trouble.
Fallon: That’s just it. She doesn’t care who she hurts or who she steps on just so SHE can come out on top.
Sheila: That figures.
Jack: I know one thing. Alexis Colby isn’t stupid.
Patrick: No. She’s not. If she were, she wouldn’t be trying to get around the law all the time.
Sheila: So let me get this straight. Adam was trying to kill you so that his mother would hire illegals?
Jeff: Something like that. I think what he was trying to do was to get me out of the way so that he could put himself in a better position in his mother’s company.
Jack: So what are we going to do about Colbyco’s hiring practices?
Sheila: And about the fact that Jack is still out of a job?
Patrick: Jack? Would you be willing, at some point, to come down to Denver to talk to my friend Smitty at the FBI?
Jack: You bet your ass I would.
Leslie: As for Sheila’s question. Denver-Carrington also has some fields up near Greeley.
Jeff: We’re looking for a good Site Foreman.
Patrick: How about it, Jack?
Jack: I don’t know what to say.
Patrick: Yes would be a good place to start. We’ll pay you half again as much as you were making at Colbyco.
Jack: I’ll take it.
Patrick: Good. Our foreman up here just retired. You start Monday.
Leslie: What about you, Sheila? What do you do?
Sheila: I’m a Geology professor at the University of Northern Colorado.
Jeff: Good. Then Denver-Carrington will make an endowment to the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado.
Patrick: In memory of Blake Carrington.
Sheila: That is really fantastic of all of you. How can we ever thank you? You seem to really be enjoying that chili, Admiral Jennings. 🙂
Patrick: Your hospitality is thanks enough. And please call me Pat. Watching Alexis Colby squirm will be even more thanks. 🙂
