Brady

Scene:  Wednesday – Denver County Jail…..

Michael Cullane:  I told you.  I wanted Duarte Simms to sell those shares to me.  Now they’re in the hands of the Deveraux Group and now my plans for taking over the Deveraux Group from the inside have to be put on hold.

Brady:  Michael.  I’m sorry.  I don’t know what to tell you.

Michael:  Well…..somebody’s got to pay.

Brady:  Why does that somebody have to be me???

Michael:  You were given a simple assignment…..(then slaps Brady in the face)…..and you muffed it.  I’d watch my back if I were you.

Deputy (coming back to take Brady to his cell):  Lloyd!  Let’s go!  Back to your cell!  (Brady has a worried look on his face while looking back at Michael Cullane as he is being led back to his cell)

(later that night)

(Brady goes in to take a shower and brush his teeth before lights out when he is jumped by a group of thugs.  They put a towel over his head and he is repeatedly beaten and then stabbed to death)

 

(the next morning – Patrick and Leslie’s office – Denver-Carrington Center.  Patrick and Leslie are watching the news)

Aristea Brady:  This just in.  Brady Lloyd, the disgraced former head of Lloyd Enterprises International was found dead this morning in his cell at the Denver County Jail, the victim of an apparent homicide.  Mr. Lloyd, as you may remember, first gained fame as a drummer for James Brown and the Jay Bees on such hits as “I Feel Good” and “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”.  He would later parlay that talent into the Lloyd Enterprises entertainment empire signing such acts as the Wandettes and Grammy Award winning artist Dominque Deveraux, who he would later marry.  Their 1985 divorce made worldwide headlines.  Recently, Mr. Lloyd had come under fire for his role in the 1968 bombing of an Army Induction Center in Oakland, California as was it revealed that Mr. Lloyd had been a member of the Black Panther Party and had become a trusted Lieutenant of Huey P. Newton, Bobby Seale and Eldridge Cleaver.  Mr. Lloyd also engineered an attempted takeover of the Deveraux Group, which was defeated and would lead to the dissolution of Lloyd Enterprises International just three days ago.  This after accepting a plea deal from the United Sates Government calling for concurrent 25 year sentences for Treason and Domestic Terrorism.  Again.  Former Music Mogul Brady Lloyd dead at the age of 81.  Aristea Brady.  Fox 31 News.

Patrick (turns off the TV and looks at  Leslie):  WOW!

Leslie:  I can’t believe it.

Patrick:  Unfortunately…..I can.  (hears his cellphone ringing)  Hello?

Ed McCormick:  Pat. It’s Ed.

Patrick:  Ed.  Talk to me.  What do you have?

Ed:  I suppose you’ve been watching the news.

Patrick:  Yeah we have.

Ed:  I’ve got some news for you.

Patrick:  Hang on, Ed.  I’m going to put you on speaker.  I want my better half to hear this too.  (puts his phone on the desk and puts it on speaker)  OK, Ed.  Are you there?

Ed:  I’m here.  Leslie?

Leslie:  I can hear you just fine, Ed.

Patrick:  OK, Ed.  Give.

Ed:  Well…..I was just talking to Smitty a little while ago and he got it direct from a man on the inside at the Jail that the hit on Brady was professional.

Leslie:  Not a surprise there, Ed.

Ed:  There’s more.  It seems that the hit on Brady was ordered by Michael Cullane.

Leslie:  What???

Patrick:  Oh yeah.  Over the Lloyd Enterprises shares that Duarte Simms was supposed to transfer to him instead of to the Deveraux Group.

Ed:  It seems Brady was going into the bathroom to do his evening routine before lights out when he was jumped by four guys.  They put towel over his head and then repeatedly beat and stabbed him until he was dead.  Then they put his body back in his cell afterwards.  I guess they thought could get away with making it look like a suicide.  They hid the murder weapon in his sheets and I guess it still had some of their fingerprints on it.

Leslie:  So what now?

Ed:  They’re still investigating to see how many inmates were actually involved.

Patrick:  So they have Cullane on a murder for hire.

Ed:  Looks like it.  I’ll tell you something else too.  The visitors’ log at the jail showed that Michael Cullane visited Brady at the County Jail last night.  I did some checking and he’s still in Denver AND he’s gunning for you.

Patrick:  OK, Ed.  I need you to do me a favor.  Get a hold of Chief Paul Pazen of the Denver P.D.  Tell him I sent you.  Also tell him to have an officer standing by at Denver-Carrington Center.  But first.  Michael Cullane and I are going to do a little business.

Leslie:  What are you going to do?

Patrick:  We’re going to get the Crater back for Denver-Carrington once and for all and it’s not going to cost us one thin dime.  Miranda?

Miranda:  Yes, Patrick?

Patrick:  Can you have Jason Fallmont come up here, please?

Miranda:  Yes, Patrick.

 

(a few minutes later)

Jason:  Yeah, Boss.  What do you need?

Patrick:  All right.  Here’s the deal.  Michael Cullane is probably on his way over here because he thinks he’s going to intimidate me because Duarte Simms sold the shares of Lloyd Enterprises stock to the Deveraux Group instead of him.  We’ve got the goods on him, so we’re going to get him to sign his interest in The Crater to Denver-Carrington.  We’ll need you to witness the transfer.  Then, we ‘re going to have the police bust in here and arrest him.

Jason:  Arrest him for what?

Leslie:  Didn’t you see the news this morning about Brady Lloyd’s death?

Jason:  Yeah.  Found dead in his cell from an apparent homicide.

Patrick:  It was a professional hit.

Jason: Wait a minute!  You mean…..?

(Both Patrick and Leslie nod their heads)

Jason:  Cullane ordered the hit.

Patrick and Leslie (in unison):  Right.

 

(a little while later – in the outer office by Miranda’s desk)

 

Michael:  Hello, doll face.  I’m here to see your boss.

Miranda (looks at Michael with utter contempt):  Whatever!  Guys.  Michael Cullane’s here.

Leslie:  Thanks, Miranda.  Send him in.

Patrick:  Michael.  To what do we owe the displeasure.

Michael:  You son of a bitch!!!  (to Leslie)  I don’t know what you see in him, Kitten.

Leslie:  He’s not a low life scumbag like you.

Michael:  You stole those shares right from under me.

Jason:  No, Mr. Cullane. He didn’t.  Those shares weren’t yours to steal. You held no ownership over them whatsoever and you wouldn’t have until your signature appeared on ANY documentation, which to this point, it hasn’t.

Michael:  I’ll get all of you for this.

Patrick:  Here’s what’s going to happen.  You are going to sign your interests in The Crater back over to Denver-Carrington.

Michael:  How much?

Patrick:  We’re not going to pay you one red cent.

Michael:  What???  Nothing doing!

Patrick:  Oh yes.  You’re going to agree to this or else.

Michael:  Or else what???

Patrick:  Or we go to the government with EVERYTHING we have on you.  And by everything, we mean EVERY THING.

Leslie:  That land was left to my Uncle Blake by my Grandmother Ellen Carrington to do with as he saw fit.  The profits generated from that land weren’t meant to be lining the pockets of scum like you.

Patrick:  I mean it, Cullane.  We’ll go to them with EVERYTHING.  The tax evasion, the drugs, prostitution, extortion, racketeering, wire fraud.  Would you like me to go on?

Michael:  All right.

Patrick (motions for Jason to bring the documents):  Jason if you please.

Jason:  Mr. Cullane if you would sign here, here and here.  (then watches as Michael signs the papers)

Michael (finishes signing):  There!  You have your stinking Crater back. Now you can just go straight to hell!

Patrick:  Looks like you’re going to beat me to it, asshole!

Michael:  What do want now???

Leslie:  We want you to leave Denver.  For good this time.

Michael: Forget it!

Patrick:  Miranda.  Are the police here yet?

Miranda:  Yes, Patrick. They just arrived.

Patrick:  Perfect.  Would you send them in, please?

Miranda:  Yes, Patrick.

Michael:  Police???  You son of a bitch!!!  What did you do???

Officer Jacobs:  Thank you for the tip, Admiral and Mrs. Jennings and I’m sorry about what happened the other day.

Leslie:  It’s OK, Officer Jacobs.  Do your duty.

Officer Jacobs:  Yes, Mrs. Jennings.  (starts to cuff Michael) Michael Cullane.  You are being charged with Contract Murder, Extortion and Racketeering.  You have the right to remain silent.  If you give up that right, anything you say and/or do can and will be used against you in a court of law.  You have the right to an attorney. If you so desire or can not afford one at this time, an attorney will be appointed for you.  Do you understand these right as I have read them to you?

Michael (as he is being led out):  YOU SONS OF BITCHES!!!!!  I’LL GET YOU!!!!!  I’LL GET ALL OF YOU!!!!!

Patrick (holds the transfer documents in his left hand and looks skyward):  We got it back for you, Blake.
